Norge Depot gains national historic status

JAMES CITY

The Norge Depot, built more than 100 years ago and now located at the James
City County Library on Croaker Road, has earned a spot on the National
Register of Historic Places.

Being on the list means the depot is eligible for preservation assistance
from the state Department of Historic Resources and requires federal
agencies to take the property's historic status into account when planning
projects in the area.

The depot was built between 1906 and 1908 by the Chesapeake and Ohio
Railroad Company. Facing possible demolition by CSX railroad in 2006, it was
moved to its current location on Croaker Road.

The depot is the last surviving structure of its type - a wood-frame
"informal standard" depot - in the six-state region in which Chesapeake and
Ohio operated, according to Renee Dallman, a spokeswoman for James City
County. The depot and others like it were built according to an informal
plan, not to the specifications of a standard architectural plan, so each
was unique in some ways.

In James City County, the depot joins Mainland Farm and Jamestown Beach
Campground and Yacht Basin, both located in the Governor's Land
Archaeological District, on the register.

The register is the official federal list of historic places considered
worthy of preservation. Created by the National Historic Preservation Act of
1966, the register includes districts, sites, buildings and objects that are
considered significant to American history, architecture, archaeology,
engineering and culture.
