Re: (rshsdepot) RSHS Convention, Topeka, Kansas, June 3-6

Here is the text of the convention flyer:

Topeka, a Capital Convention!

The 2009 convention of the Railroad Station Historical Society will be
headquartered in Topeka, the capital of Kansas from Wednesday, 3 June
through Saturday, 6 June. Take note of those days! This is our first
convention that follows a new pattern, established by your board of
directors so that virtually everyone will be able to attend all four days.

Eric and Mary Louise Stahl have been hard at work, with the assistance
of their committee, to insure that this will be a delightful, memorable
and green meeting. We’ll travel to a variety of structures in eastern
and central Kansas over the course of the four days. A detailed list of
structures will be sent with confirmation of your registration. As has
been the case in recent years, we’ll not only have great fellowship on
our bus, we’ll have an auction of railroad books and other items on one
day, and the distribution of door prizes on another day.

In addition to the bus tour on Saturday, there will also be an
opportunity for fellowship when a group with a miniature railroad and a
collection of structures will open their private domain in the Topeka
area for us to enjoy. We’ll have a casual meal delivered there on a
“Dutch treat” basis. There is a check-off to let us know if you’ll
participate in that activity.

Our headquarters hotel will be the Topeka Ramada, where a buffet
breakfast(included in the price of your room) is available to all guests
from 6:30 AM every morning. Our banquet will be held there on Friday
evening. Rooms with one or two beds may be reserved until 13 May at
$79.00 plus tax. Call the Ramada at 1-800-432-2424 and mention that you
are with the Railroad Station Historical Society convention for this
rate. All rooms have a microwave, a refrigerator and an internet
connection. Registering for the convention will not assure you of a
room; you must make your own room reservation.

As in prior years, you will save money and make life easier for our
hosts if you register early. This is reflected on the registration form.
Note: each registration includes one banquet ticket and one door prize
ticket. Each registrant will receive a tour book with Kansas railroad
history, maps and details on the structures we’ll visit.

Our banquet speaker this year will be Reverend Herman Page, an expert on
Kansas depots, past and present. He will be bringing us a program on the
depots that we’ll not see on our tours.

It is not certain at this time whether we will have a caravan on
Wednesday, 3 June; that will depend on whether we have enough vehicles
to do so. There is a check-off on the registration form for you to let
us know if you’ll have a vehicle for the caravan.
If we do not have a caravan, that tour will be done by bus at additional
expense.

For those of you arriving by train, the Ramada is just two walkable
blocks from the Amtrak station. If you are flying, there is a shuttle
between Kansas City and Topeka, or you may wish to rent a car,
especially if there is more than one attendee traveling together. To
make sure that everyone has information on getting to the Ramada, we’ll
send driving directions for getting to the hotel to those needing them.

The cost is $160 until April 20th, after that the cost is $180. The
cost includes three days of bus tours, guide, and the Friday night
banquet. Non-members add $12 to the above costs.

To register, email me and I will send you the form.
