(rshsdepot) Lake Forest Preservation Foundation needs information
From: Lake Forest Preservation Foundation
Subject: Lake Forest Preservation Foundation needs information
The Restoration of the 1900 Chicago & Northwestern Railway Station in Lake
Forest, IL is being done by the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation (LFPF,
www.lfpf.org www.lfpf.org/hot_topics.html ).
While many exterior photographs have been found from different years, only
one historic photographic of the interior has been found. [1] The Chicago
and North Western Historical Society ( www.cnwhs.org ) has provided copies
of the Frost & Granger plans. However, there are many interior details not
specified.
We are asking for both pictorial and textual descriptions of the
interior -either purposeful or accidental-from 1900 to the 1970s.
Purposeful descriptions include published and unpublished descriptions or
photographs to railroad trade and railfan publications; display ads, trade
fair information, or personal mementoes from suppliers or the contractors
(the original Grace & Hyde contractors or contractors of later renovations),
etc.
Accidental descriptions include letters or postcards written home from
tourists, photographs of arriving or departing visitors, and even
photographs of station and express agency employees. These photographs may
contain valuable clues in the background of these employee views.
While the restoration plan from Harboe Architects ( www.harboearch.com ) is
still in the draft stage, we would like information on the ladies (north)
waiting room fireplace. The type of floor tile is of particular interest.
Woodworking, fixtures, and other details are important. As an example of
what has already been learned, preliminary paint chip analysis suggests the
waiting room was originally painted orange similar to that in the C&NW
Racine station.
This restoration will build upon the restoration of the station by LFPF from
1978-86 which inspired other Chicago-area communities to restore, rather
than replace their existing train stations.
If appropriate and available, we would appreciate an electronic distribution
of this notice if a printed newsletter is not imminent.
