Lackawanna Railroad Station Marks 100 Years

Lackawanna Railroad Station Marks 100 Years
By Jon Meyer
Tuesday marks 100 years since the Lackawanna Railroad Station was dedicated
in Scranton.
In 1908, the place was the new hub of a bustling city and today many
gathered to celebrate that it's still around and still a busy place.
The sign then said Scranton is coming back. Now the word 'coming' is crossed
off.
The birthday celebration marked the station's anniversary but also what many
called Scranton's return to glory.
Organizers said the building mirrors the past 100 years in Scranton.
The railroad industry was bustling when the place opened. The train station
closed in the early 1970s and was empty for a decade until a big effort to
refurbish it.
Now this is a popular hotel that is still in use.
"This is a great day for the city of Scranton to continue to show the world
not what we were but what we are today and to tie this together is very
special for us right now," said Michael Kearney of the Radisson Lackawanna Station.
There were efforts to recreate the feel of 1908 at Tuesday's celebration.
Horse drawn carriages were parked in front. Rides were offered too as part of
that flashback to opening day.
There is a cocktail party tonight and other events are planned over the next
year to celebrate the Lackawanna Station anniversary.
