Railroad station getting spruced up, improved

By Lee Lutz

The rain let up just in time for an announcement at the Stony Brook railroad
station of over $2.5 million in improvements to the site adjacent to Stony
Brook University. Appropriately, SBU President Shirley Strum Kenny and
representatives of the Commuter Student Association were on hand to bask in the glow
of the upgrades — displayed on large posters — that will soon be under way,
funded by a grant secured by state Sen. John Flanagan (R-East Northport), who
hosted the event on Oct. 28.

Flanagan said the effort was "a cooperative venture" including the MTA, Long
Island Rail Road and the university. "I sat down and listened to the people
involved," he said. "Clean, nice bathrooms are worth a lot." The assembled
representatives broke into applause at that comment.

"About a third of our students are commuters," said Kenny, "including a
number with disabilities." The improvements include items to address compliance
with the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, the plan calls for repl
acement of the platform shelters, improving the heating system inside the
building and extensive lighting improvements to enhance safety.

"We will feel safer," said senior Elyssa Infurna of Franklin Square, 21, a
commuter assistant on campus and member of the Commuter Student Association who
utilizes the LIRR to attend classes. "Not too many colleges have a train
station right at their campus."

Flanagan added that funding he secured is already being used to repaint the
railroad bridge over Nicolls Road, just east of the train station.
