Grants loses BNSF depot to demolition

GRANTS - The depot is no more.
 
The railway station, originally built by what was then the Santa Fe Railway  
Company during the 1920s, was considered a liability. 

Star Gonzales, executive director of the Grants/Cibola Chamber of  Commerce, 
spoke with railroad officials last week, after they had taken another  look at 
the old railroad depot on Santa Fe Avenue, and decided that because it  was 
only 30 feet away from the railroad track, it was a liability. 
 
“Based on the overall condition and, in this case, the intended purpose by  
the chamber, we felt it was not a good location,” said Joe Faust, director of  
public affairs for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway.
 
Gonzales stated that she had expected to have enough time to submit a  
proposal for moving the building back, and to a safer location, but BNSF moved  
quickly with its demolition plans.
 
Gonzales said that there is still a possibility that BNSF will donate a  
railcar to be used for a museum, and this was confirmed by Faust who said,  “
because of our presence, 80 to 100 trains a day, we want to make a  contribution.”
