NJ Transit begins final phase of South Amboy Station reconstruction
New Jersey Transit recently began building a new center-island, high-level
platform as part of the South Amboy Station reconstruction project. Once the
project is complete at 2009's end, 127 of the agency's 224 rail stations will
be accessible to disabled persons.
The project also calls for adding a platform canopy, climate-controlled
waiting shelters, a ticket office and restrooms. In addition, NJ Transit is
installing closed-circuit security cameras, new customer communication systems —
including variable message signs and a public-address system — and elevator
and stairs.
The project's first phase, which was completed earlier this year, included
realigning the tracks to make room for the platform, as well as signal, switch
and overhead power system improvements.
