Many Eager For Dallas Union Station Renovations Reporting Bud Gillett DALLAS
(CBS 11 News) ¯ Even the dust from workers` activities can`t hide the
grandeur of the second story railway waiting room -- destined now to be a Great
Hall.
A restaurant, renovated ballroom and meeting rooms at historic Dallas Union
Station all are rumored to be part of a package to be unveiled next week.
The upgrades are part of an ongoing $55 million renovation here and at the
nearby Reunion Tower.
For train lovers, it is seen as more than merely a facelift.
``I love it!`` Barbara Cowart exclaimed. ``I remember when this was a
thriving train community, and I think it`ll be fabulous.``
Barbara and Mike Cowart were taking their grandkids to Temple on Saturday.
``It`s really fun riding trains,`` their granddaughter Ashlyn Bell. ``I love
to spend time with them.``
DART and the Trinity Railway Express already share Union Station with Amtrak,
and Mike Cowart senses the restoration and says it comes at just the right
time.
``You can expand your train service, your commuter service … in light of the
gas crisis today its something people should really look into,`` he said.
Woodbine Development and the Hyatt Regency Hotel first announced the project
as part of a multi-million-dollar hotel expansion and renovation of Reunion
Tower.
One of its restaurant designers has ties with Spago, and the Beverly Hilton
Circa 55 Restaurant . For Janet and Larry Keutzer, who took the train from
Austin to stay at the Hyatt, a glittering new Union Station is just one more
reason to come.
``It`ll be nice to just walk through there and walk into the hotel,`` Janet
Keutzer pondered.
Larry Keutzer added he can`t imagine how planners will improve the
already-nice-looking icon
