Rutherford train station to be restored

Two historic North Jersey rail stations will get modern-day face-lifts and
upgrades.

NJ Transit will spend more than $3 million to restore the original exterior
of the 110-year-old Rutherford train station and install communication systems
 at the Paterson station.

The $1.4 million Rutherford project will include cleaning the station's
brick-and-stone structure, restoring its copper-clad window enclosure and
replacing windowsills, doors and columns, NJ Transit Executive Director Richard
Sarles said.

Construction will begin this summer, with completion expected in 2009. A
second phase of the project — funded by a $1.9 million federal grant — will
restore the station's interior, Sarles said.

NJ Transit is looking to improve stations such as Rutherford and Paterson
because their usage and history are "significant," Sarles said. "We [also] had
federal funds available to do it."

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Rutherford station
serves approximately 940 riders on a typical weekday. The Paterson station,
which was built before 1930 and was restored seven years ago, serves 600 riders
on weekdays.

"These improvements demonstrate both the [municipalities'] and NJ Transit's
commitment to preserving the state's historic assets," state Transportation
Commissioner Kris Kolluri said.

Installing new customer communication systems at the Paterson station,
meanwhile, will be the final phase of an ongoing rehabilitation of the building,
NJ Transit officials said.

The station's public address system will be improved and customer
information signs will be added that display up-to-the-minute service messages, Sarles
said.

The signs will be installed at platform and street level for bus and rail
riders.

Also, cameras will be upgraded and a remote elevator monitoring and control
system will be installed.

Work is expected to begin in July and be completed in early 2009, Sarles
said.

The same federal grant that paid for the earlier phases of the station
rehabilitation will fund the current project.

"Through careful investment in Paterson Station in recent years, we have
preserved its historic character while making it accessible to customers with
disabilities," Sarles said.
