Chatsworth Station keeps historic feel

CHATSWORTH - Tucked in the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley, the
community of Chatsworth has long been known as boulder and horse country.

And at one time it also was a key rail hub for settlers and travelers to the
region, bringing hundreds of passengers into the area at a time when
sagebrush and cactus dominated the landscape.

The first rail station for Chatsworth Park was built by Southern Pacific
Railroad about 1893 near the intersection of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and
Marilla Avenue near the old Chatsworth Inn.

But no one knows exactly when it was built.

"The Southern Pacific records were burned in the fire that was part of the
big San Francisco Earthquake (in 1906) so the date is approximate," said Virgin
ia Watson, with the Chatsworth Historical Society.

And Watson said the depot itself also burned down a short time later in
1917, according to early pioneers.

A second, larger station was constructed on the west side of the tracks
between Devonshire Street and Lassen.

Developers worked hard to retain the historic feel of the area, which was
often the site of filming for hundreds of Westerns.

The current building resembles the old station with its architectural roof
lines, and serves both Metrolink and Amtrak.

It also houses the offices of City Councilman Greig Smith, who represents
the area as part of Los Angeles' 12th District.
