Gentlemen and others:
One important reminder in all the rants about preservation of this building:
The locals in Seligman had been given FIFTEEN YEARS to attempt
preservation--FAR longer than most such proposals get. They still ultimately
failed to secure the critical mass of enthusiasm and monies necessary for this
project. Ultimately, this falls under the banner of "Ya can't save
everything".
As for saving everything "historic", sadly we have this little concept in the
USA called "property rights". Imagine if someone declared your old backyard
shed or old car "historic" and thus prevented you from demolishing/scrapping
it, while still mandating that you maintain said object at your own cost.
These kind of battles are fought almost every day in city and state planning
committees and historic-preservation committees, as property owners who
planned to build a hotel, parking garage, or development are told that they
can't just knock down that old barn or office building because someone calls
it "historic" or "a landmark".
