Historic Lead Round House gets grant for renovation
By Journal staff
The Black Hills Fort Pierre Railroad Round House in Lead will be receiving a
$25,000 grant for renovation at the historic structure.
The grant, which was approved by the Deadwood City Commission on March 17,
was recommended by Deadwood Historic Preservation to help preserve the last
original railroad building in Lead and help the local economy as the owners,
Duane and Phyllis Sander, work to make the Round House a tourist attraction.
Winter Construction is in the midst of renovating and doing interior work at
the structure at a cost of more than $1 million.
Built in 1901, the Round House was a hub of railroad activity in the Northern
Hills for nearly three decades, servicing Black Hills Fort Pierre and
Burlington engines until 1930, when it closed.
Among the attractions the Sanders plan to include at the renovated Round
House is a Railroad Historical Interpretive Center and works by local artist Ed
Carr.
Carr recently finished the first in a series of railroad displays, a scale
static model of the Round House -- complete with its round table steam engine
and tender. The model will be on display through Saturday at Lynn's Dakota
Mart in Lead.
Carr's next project will be a 17-foot-long mural of the 54-mile rail system
of the Black Hills Fort Pierre and Deadwood Central railroads.
Other attractions planned include a railroad-themed restaurant, a multimedia
theater that will tell the story of the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, two
gift shops and an antique store.
