The _Ellicott City_
(http://www.mcall.com/topic/us/maryland/howard-county/ellicott-city-PLGEO100100612040000.topic) Railroad Station, the oldest
surviving railroad station in America and the original terminus of the first 13 miles
of commercial railroad in the country, will tell a special Civil War story
through May 4.

''Civil War: The Maryland Story, Retreat by Rail,'' focuses on the Battle of
Monocacy which was fought by Union forces and Jubal Early's Confederate
Raiders near Frederick, Md., in 1864.

Also in March, the nearby B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore will present a
program celebrating and recognizing the role women played in railroading.
Educational programs will focus on how women filled traditionally male-dominated
jobs in the shops and track crews during both World Wars.

The B&O Museum, at 901 W. Pratt St., is about 13 miles and a 30-minute drive
from the Ellicott City Station.

The Ellicott City program focuses on the ''Battle that Saved Washington.''
The Battle of Monocacy ended in a Confederate victory that led to a chaotic
Union retreat via the National Road and the B&O Railroad's main line.

This desperate action served to delay the Confederate forces and allowed
critical troops time to reinforce the nation's capital and save it from capture.

The Ellicott City Station, administered by the B&O Railroad Museum is a full
affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and also features the Main Depot
building, constructed in 1830-31; the freight house (1855) featuring a 40-foot
HO-gauge model train layout showing the original thirteen miles of commercial
rail track stretching from Baltimore to Ellicott Mills; a replica of the
first horse-drawn passenger rail car (the Pioneer); and a 1927 ''I-5'' Caboose.

The special exhibit features rare artifacts and images from the collection
of noted Civil War author and historian Daniel Carroll Toomey, the United
States National Park Service, Monocacy National Battlefield Park and the B&O
Railroad Museum's collection.

Exhibits show how divided loyalties and the burden of war affected daily
life in Ellicott's Mills, and how the Battle of Monocacy and ensuing retreat by
Union forces affected the region.

In addition to the exhibits, there will be musket-firing demonstrations at
noon and 2 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays through May 4.

The much larger B&O Museum in Baltimore is home to the oldest, most
comprehensive collection of railroad artifacts in the Western Hemishere including
many 18th and 19th century engines and related equipment.

The site includes the 1851 Mt. Clare Station, the restored 1884 Baldwin
Roundhouse and the first mile of commercial railroad track in America. In the
Roundhouse, visitors can climb aboard a locomotive.

Beginning in April, the museum's All Aboard! train ride season resumes Wedne
sdays through Sundays through December. The rides are included in the
admission price.
