Train depot getting a new life

BELLFLOWER - For years, the old train depot wasted away on Bellflower
Boulevard.
Until recently, the depot that once served as a spot for folks waiting to
ride the Red Car Trolley to downtown Los Angeles degraded into a blighted haven
for pigeons.
Now after more than a year of planning and four months of construction, city
officials will unveil Thursday the newly restored Pacific Electric train
depot.
"It's going to be a nice addition to the downtown," said Community
Development Director Brian Lee, who helped bring the project to fruition. "It will be
a link to the historical past of Bellflower."
Officials spent some of the $773,000 in federal and state, redevelopment
funds to recreate the depot's 1920s look, hiring an architect with extensive
knowledge of the Pacific Electric system.
The depot area includes an open train platform, authentic Western Union and
railway transit office signs, an apple orchard, a small picnic area and a faux
freight house that houses restrooms and a public works field house.
The area includes concrete artwork with a map of where the Red Car travelled
and historical photographs of the depot, Lee said.
For many, like City Councilman Randy Bomgaars, the depot is a step back into
childhood.
"I remember riding the Red Line to Los Angeles with my parents," he said. "So
the old PE car, or the Red Car as it was called, brings back youthful
memories. I think part of a successful community is remembering its past but also
stepping into the future."
The event, which is free to the public and includes refreshments and a
Dixieland band, will take place at 4 p.m. along Bellflower Boulevard at Mayne
Street. For information, visit the city's Web site at www.bellflower.org or call
562-804-1424.
