Have you ridden anywhere along the Inland Route recently ? I rode the Amtrak Springfield/New Haven Shuttle about
1 year ago. It was an eye-opener.

The Inland Route is problematic, at best. The line from New Haven to Springfield is single-track with few passing
sidings. It's infested with numerous grade crossings and speed restrictions as well. Springfield to Worcester is much
the same. Not to mention the fact that has Amtrak effectively eliminated the use of diesels in the Northeast (the Boston
section of the Lakeshore Limited and the Downeaster between Boston and Portland, Maine being the only exceptions).
Many extra engines would need to be brought in from other parts of the US, and engines would need to be changed
over in New Haven. Acela Express passengers would either need to change trains or else the Acelas would have to
run from NH to Boston behind diesels. The only alternative would be to substitute standard rolling stock for the Acela
sets along the entire route from VA to Boston during the shutdown. It's simply too much of a nuisance to go through all
that for a mere four day bridge closure.
