FERNLEY--Longtime subscribers of the Fernley Leader may remember monthly
articles that appeared in the paper called "The Depot News".
This informative column kept readers of the paper up-to-date with what was
happening with the Fernley Railway Depot and the Fernley Preservation Society.
With the return of this column we are hoping to keep the public informed and
to generate interest in our various projects within our community.
Some residents might be unaware of the historic significance of our Depot or
of our society's undertaking to preserve and restore this structure as a
railway and cultural museum.
The depot was constructed in 1914 to serve the junction of the Fernley &
Lassen Railway.
The F&L was built towards the northwest from Fernley to Westwood, CA (north
of Susanville) to serve the needs of the Red River Lumber Company.
The Depot remained an active part of the Southern Pacific Railroad until its
closure in 1985. Local residents came together and formed the Fernley
Preservation Society in order to save this piece of Fernley history.
The building was acquired from the SPRR and was relocated about one mile east
to its present location in September of 1986.
The FPS is a nonprofit tax exempt organization that has been in existence for
22 years. During that time the society has not only restored the exterior of
the depot, but has also acquired a vast collection of rolling stock,
artifacts and pieces of local history.
In addition FPS hosts Rail Days every September and the Christmas tree
lighting event in December.
All of our projects have been completed though volunteer effort and support
from local business and private donations.
This last year we moved the Northern Pacific Caboose #1712 from the golf club
 in Fernley to the depot.
This caboose currently holds our gift shop until the interior of the depot is
complete. We also have made considerable progress in restoring the Cotton
Belt Caboose #48 which was damaged by a fire years ago.
This year FPS is going to relocate and restore the Southern Pacific Switcher
Locomotive #1213 which is located in California at the moment.
A few years ago two N-Scale layouts were donated to FPS. Recently several
modeling enthusiasts began working on restoring and operating them.
With the interest generated by these model railroads we are in the process of
forming a Model Railroad Club that is planning to construct an HO scale
layout as well as continue operation of the N scale layouts.
Membership to the FPS is open to anyone interested in historical
preservation, railroads, local history or model railroading. For more information on our
events, membership, the gift shop or how to donate, please contact the
Fernley Preservation Society, PO Box 683, Fernley, NV. 89408 or call Linda Sanders
at 775) 575-2515
Future columns in the Fernley Leader will feature items of historical
interest as well as FPS news and happenings.
