Spitzer announces plans to develop Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge into state
park
Albany – The Poughkeepsie Highland Railroad Bridge, which has remained
dormant since the mid-1970s when fire rendered it unable to carry trains across
the Hudson River, will be developed into a state park, Governor Eliot Spitzer
announced Wednesday.
In his state of the state message in Albany, he committed state dollars to
develop the bridge into a walkway and bikeway park with “breathtaking views”
of the Hudson.
“When built in 1888, in typical New York style, was the longest bridge in the
world, an engineering marvel,” he said. “For the last three decades;
however, the bridge has sat empty and unused. As a pedestrian bridge over the
Hudson, it will allow New Yorkers to connect to the history and natural beauty of
our state and draw them to Poughkeepsie, Kingston and surrounding communities.
”
The Walkway Over The Hudson non-profit organization has plans to redevelop
the bridge and has already secured some federal funding for the project.
The proposal received kudos from Assemblyman Kevin Cahill and Senator Stephen
Saland, both representing portions along the Hudson River.
