Work could begin by this summer on a project to repair and preserve the
downtown Amtrak station.
A $300,000 state grant will pay for roofing, brickwork and other repairs to
stabilize the historic depot and nearby Express Building.
Officials met Thursday at the station to prioritize a list of repairs.
"We want to make sure that what is being done is also maintained," said Steve
Duke, principal planner for the Region 2 Planning Commission.
The depot is on the National Register of Historic Places, so renovations must
 keep a historical appearance.
Duke said the public needs to see the importance of preserving the station,
which was built in 1873 and is believed to be the second-oldest station in
operation in the country.
"It's part of our community, a part of our history," he said.

Officials plan to hire an architect whose design will historically preserves
the building.
"We're not going to try to short-cut anything," aid Therese Cody, rail
operating programs manager for the state transportation department. "It's a
building process, and it's going to take awhile."
Design work could be completed over the winter, said Ron Blaine, manager of
engineering services for Amtrak's Central Division.
Plans are to turn the station into an intermodal rail-bus transportation
center, which would include moving the Jackson Transportation Authority
bus-transfer center from Cortland Street.
Those renovations depend on how much federal money officials can get. Duke
estimates about $12 million will be needed.
The station was renovated in 1978 with about $200,000 in state money; the
platform was rebuilt in 1984 with a $275,000 federal grant.
