Well, Penn Central was not about to spend the money. After all, getting rid of the bridge meant cutting more business away from Erie Lackawanna. The E-L could get to Maybrook directly, or via the L&HR (which also could pick up freight from the Reading and Lehigh Valley). But PC was not about to spend money so that EL or the remains of the Alphabet Route or LV could preserve business competitive to PC.

You might want to see Gif Moore's great article in the New Jersey Midlander on this -- it appeared a few years ago. He was the last president of the L&HR.

Of course, mysterious fires on inconvenient bridges on the New Haven happened before -- South Boston on the Old Colony being a notable example.

Quiz Question: What is the most obscure CNE&W interchange partner at Campbell Hall/Maybrook?

Cheers,
Jim Guthrie
