(rshsdepot) Poughkeepsie RR Bridge

The rail traffic on the bridge was down to a small fraction of previous years when the bridge burned. There was not enough traffic to keep the line alive even if the bridge did not burn. Most of the New England rail shippers are gone and very few people use coal today. The remaining shippers are on major truck routes, not railroads. Even the big rail yard in Maybrook is now a truck terminal just off interstate 84.

The railroads were not about to spend millions of dollars to fix a bridge when there was not enough revenue traffic to pay for a paint job.
