POUGHKEEPSIE — The state has awarded a $500,000 grant to Walkway Over the
Hudson, the local effort to transform the abandoned Poughkeepsie railroad
bridge into a public park.
The money will come from the state’s Environmental Protection Fund, which is
part of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The bridge was built in 1888, an engineering marvel that was then the
longest bridge in the world. After a 1974 fire, the bridge was abandoned.
In the late 1990s, a group of local volunteers began a grass-roots campaign
to save the bridge.
