SOUTH AMBOY — As part of its ongoing overhaul of the city's rail station, the
NJ Transit Board of Directors Wednesday approved a $20.7 million contract to
construct a new high-level platform that puts the station in compliance with
the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Work will be completed by Hall Construction of Howell.

Spokesman Dan Stessel said the center-island platform elevates passengers to
the level of train doors, rather than track level.

"It makes the train more accessible for people with disabilities," he said.
"It will be more friendly to all customers (too)."

Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2009. Stessel said work
will be completed at times and in a manner designed to have the least amount
of impact on the station's 1,300 daily weekday riders.

The platform represents the second phase of improvements. Previously, a
pedestrian overpass was opened, a grade crossing was closed and another opened.
The Board also last year awarded a $4.2 million contract to Northeast Remsco
of Toms River, to relocate overhead power and signal structures to accommodate
the new platform.

Stessel said the forthcoming and final phase in the improvements is an
800-space park-and-ride lot. That project will not be completed until late 2009.
