Bayline Depot Burns
The fight to save the old Panama City Bayline Train Depot is over.
The depot, at West 6th Street and Beach Drive, burned to the ground overnight.
The fire started shortly before one this morning. The flames spread very quickly through the old wooden structure. The heat could be felt three blocks away.
Firefighters concentrated on keeping flames and flying cinders from drifting across the road to massive fuel storage tanks.
BY 1:30 AM Today the depot was mostly gone. But an hour later, crews were still putting water on burning railroad ties, stored on the property.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office are on the scene this morning. They're looking for signs of arson in the debris.
There are no reports of injuries from the fire. But some of the surrounding properties have smoke and heat damage.
West Beach Drive was closed for about 6 Hours, but has now been reopened. West 6th Street and Mulberry Ave are still closed due to debris from the fire being in the roadway, along with fire fighting men and equipment.
