Plans for railroad depot steam forward
By: by Connie McCullough, Contributing Writer
Several interested groups met recently to coordinate and plan the
restoration of the Historic Tehachapi Railroad Depot. Friends of the Depot, the
Heritage League, Main Street and the City of Tehachapi met in a working session to
evaluate the current stage of restoration and to develop a platform of
progress that would move the project forward.
Greg Garrett, Assistant City Manager, chaired the meeting. Mike Perra,
builder of Pioneer Park, will be spearhead the project. Garrett noted that the
city has hired two new employees whose first priority will be the restoration
project.
The participants were clearly excited, and the meeting discussion ultimately
led a business plan for the interior of the depot. The plan includes a
museum with a train theme, a visitor center, a gift shop, and possibly office
space for Main Street.
Planners indicated that Tehachapi residents should begin to see significant
changes very soon, to include painting the exterior. The new roof has already
been completed. Many residents are anxious to see the depot fully restored,
including Tehachapi News Editor Carin Enovijas, whose late father was
significantly involved in the project. She is planning to donate his extensive
collection of railroad memorabilia and photographs to the upcoming train museum.
Anyone else wishing to participate in the restoration of this historic building
should contact Doug Pickard, President of The Friends of the Depot at
823-8225.
