Move started to preserve railroad depot

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) A $5.7 million drive has begun to finish restoration of
a historic railroad depot in downtown Aberdeen.

Officials say a minimum of $900,000 is needed to get the air-handling
systems operating in the building.

The fund drive is intended not only to preserve the depot but also maintain
it in the future.

About $1.8 million has been spent already on preliminary work in the
building which currently houses the Native American Cultural Center and Museum,
James Valley Model Railroad Association, and the World War II _Red Cross_
(http://www.kxmc.com/t/red-cross) Canteen Exhibit.

Plans call for eventual establishment of a regional railroad museum, gift
shop, office space, and an outdoor wall to honor _American Indian_
(http://www.kxmc.com/t/american-indian) chiefs.
