State OKs railroad bridge plan
Walkway plan moving forward

HIGHLAND— The effort to reopen the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge to
pedestrians and cyclists received a boost last week from the New York state Bridge
Authority.
The authority's commissioners endorsed the plan from non-profit Walkway Over
the Hudson to reopen the span, closed since a 1974 fire.
“This unique landmark is a real asset to the Hudson Valley and I am proud
the Bridge Authority will join the Dyson Foundation and the growing list of
leaders and organizations who want to see this dream become a reality,”
authority Chairman James Sproat said in a statement.
Authority officials said the renovated railroad bridge would be “a benefit
to the recreational and historic heritage of the Hudson Valley.
“The Board of Commissioners recognizes the value of preserving and restoring
a national landmark, the potential positive economic impact for both sides
of the Hudson River and expanding state park land.”
Walkway recently received a $1.5 million grant from the Millbrook-based
Dyson Foundation for engineering and planning studies, which are needed before
renovations can begin.
Local leaders hope the bridge can be open for the 400th anniversary
celebration of Henry Hudson's voyage on the river, set for 2009.
