JOE PLASKO/TIMES NEWS Lindsay Bast of Beeline Hobbies displays some of
the model train merchandise she has in stock in her new shop, which
opened in the Tamaqua train depot this month.
Lindsay J. Bast has found the perfect place for a model train shop.
What better place for train enthusiasts to encounter Bast and her line
of models and other memorabilia than Tamaqua's restored 1874
Philadelphia and Reading train depot on North Railroad Street?
This month Bast opened Beeline Hobbies in the train station's ticket
office, which had been a gift shop for Tamaqua's Save Our Station (SOS)
organization. When Gertrude Hawk's candy shop moved out of the depot,
the gift shop moved into the sitting room and a vacancy was created in
the ticket office.
Bast is an Orwigsburg native. She and her husband Mike have moved to
Tamaqua, and the couple has a 10 month-old daughter, Michayla.
Trains are not just a hobby for the Bast family. Mike's fulltime
employment is with the L&S Railroad in Wilkes-Barre, and on weekends he
works with Stourbridge Rail Excursion passenger train in Honesdale.
Lindsay says her husband has enjoyed model trains from an early age.
When the Basts heard about the opening in the train station, it seemed
like a natural to them. "Trains, train station ... it's all good," said
Lindsay.
Beeline Hobbies specializes is HO and N scale model trains. "In addition
to what we have here, we can also do special orders, and we also see on
eBay," Lindsay explained.
The shop currently has some photographs of trains, books and some other
train-related memorabilia.
Lindsay said she plans to produce a special limited edition souvenir
coal car for sale at the station, and the business could expand into
other hobby-related areas in the future.
Beeline Hobbies also has a custom freight car fundraising program
available to organizations that want to sell something novel instead of
T-shirts, candy or other items. Logos can be provided for the models,
which can be sold as assembly kits or already assembled cars.
"My goal is to bring back traditional hobbies in the area," said
Lindsay. "I'm not into video games in the malls. I want trains, planes
and automobiles."
Beeline Hobbies is open Wednesdays from 4:30-8 p.m., Thursdays and
Fridays from 4:30-9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays
from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The phone number is (570) 225-5839 or visit the website at
