Dumb question - when is it NC&StL and when is it L&N? I know the railroads
shared rail from Atlanta to Cartersville, and ultimately combine and
recombine (and recombine again) to become Family Lines and then CSX, but I
always think of Etowah as Louisville and Nashville station and line(s).

The L&N bought the NC&St.L in a hostile stock take over in 1880. The allowed
the NC to operate as a subsidiary company until August 1957. The NC&St.L had
trackage from Chattanooga to Atlanta by 99 year lease of the Georgia state
owned Western and Atlantic RR. As a side note the L&N made a deal with the
State of Georgia where the state gained control of the Civil War engine "The
General" in exchange for a renewal of the lease.
