Amtrak Depot Restoration On Again
They say you only get one chance to make a first impression and a group in
Minot believes the current state of the Amtrak Depot is not a good impression
for the city. For the past 5 years efforts have been made to rebuild the
depot, but costs have been too high. By splitting the project in phases it becomes
more feasible. It will cost $400,000 to fix the exterior of the depot. The
state has promised a $290,000 grant but they would first like to see a
guarantee for the rest. On Tuesday, July 31st a city sub-committee approved the
funding. “This is a railroad city and I know we can raise the money. It seems the
time is right and the funding is in place to get it done,” says Dr. Dennis
Lutz, Chairman of the Minot Amtrak Depot Restoration Committee. The city has
already committed $69,000 to the project and Tuesday’s decision is for another
$40,000 that the full city council will vote on. The Depot Restoration
Committee says they will pay back the $40,000 by fundraising. Work on the depot
could start next spring.
