Back on Track After 70 Years
IRELAND'S oldest train station is to be put back on track more than 70 years
after the last train left its platform.
Broadstone Station, in Dublin's north inner city, will reopen in 2010, when
it will serve up to 5,000 commuters every hour.
Iarnrod Eireann's decision to reopen the impressive station was welcomed by
architecture enthusiasts all over the city.
They feel that the neo-Egyptian style building is currently going to waste as
a CIE office block. However, plans show that Dublin Bus will retain its
headquarters in the main part of the building.
The protected structure was originally closed to passengers in January 1937,
but will open again in three years' time to service routes to commuter towns
such as Maynooth, Kildare, Dunboyne and Clonsilla.
New tracks, measuring 2.5 kilometres, will be laid between Broadstone Station
and Liffey Junction, where they will then connect with the Maynooth line.
New ticket offices, electronic signalling and passenger facilities will bring
the total cost of the project up to an estimated 35million.
'We have such huge growth at the minute that we need all the city centre
capacity possible,' said an Iarnrod Eireann spokesman. 'The tracks servicing the
line are largely intact but a lot of work needs to be done.' Iarnrod Eireann
has also said that Broadstone Station will have a large catchment area thanks
to its city centre location.
A Luas line is to be extended to the station by 2012.
