What would happen to Lincoln Station?
If an arena is built near the Lincoln Station in the Haymarket, would Amtrak
still ferry passengers in and out of the area?
The passenger terminal opened in 1927 and Amtrak has offered service there
since 1971.
The Amtrak route runs from Chicago to California through Nebraska.
The arena committee’s preferred sites would require the railroad tracks west
of the Haymarket to be consolidated and moved west.
One arena design would use the Lincoln Station as an entrance to the arena,
and model the rest of the arena on the station’s historic, red brick design.
What then, would become of the building, which is largely occupied by
Burlington Northern Santa Fe offices?
(The principal owner of Lincoln Station is The Arter Group.)
Assistant Planning Director Kent Morgan said that doesn’t mean the station
would close. If Lincoln Station were used as the arena entrance, a new Amtrak
station could be built elsewhere, he said.
Arena organizers have talked to Amtrak officials, Morgan said, and “they were
happy about the prospect of a new station.”
He said Amtrak has built new, smaller stations in other cities.
Also often mentioned by arena organizers: A long-term goal of commuter rail
service between Lincoln and Omaha.
