This weekend is the seventh annual Doors Open, an
event sponsored by the City of Toronto's Culture
Division. 150 buildings or parts of buildings
that are not normally open to the public will
throw open their doors between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
on Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27. Toronto
was the first city in North America to sponsor
this event and it has since been duplicated in
cities throughout Ontario. As usual, the Toronto
Railway Historical Association will be actively
interpreting two of the sites.
1. The Canadian Pacific Railway John Street
Roundhouse will have three bays open, with
visitors permitted inside to view some of the
railway equipment. There will be a live steam
miniature railway operating in Roundhouse Park,
along with other exhibits. There will also be a
train show inside Steam Whistle Brewing, with
historical displays, model railroads and a
demonstration of a computer simulation of the
Toronto railway lands in 1954.
2. Union Station will have hourly 45-minute tours
on both days starting at 10:15. There will also
be a historical display of archival photographs
in the centre of the Great Hall.
There are also other venues of railway interest
that will be open during the weekend:
3. There are guided tours of the former CPR North
Toronto Station/Summerhill LCBO. If you haven't
visited this wonderful restoration, be sure to do
so. Check out the 360° Quick Time panorama of the
old waiting room on the Doors Open website.
4. The former CP Royal York Hotel is also having
guided tours on Sunday of some of the ground
floor facilities, including the Imperial Room.
The groups are limited to 10-15 people and, if
past experience is any guide, I expect that there
will be line-ups. There is a very interesting
archival display on the 2nd floor mezzanine
surrounding the hotel lobby that you can visit at
any time.
