Lyon formally approves purchase of Dayton Station

A key step towards restoration of the former Dayton railroad station/depot building was realized last Thursday when the Lyon County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of the property from local developer Jim Bawden.

The property will be purchased through a federal Transportation Equity Act of the 21st Century grant (TEA-21) that is administered by the Nevada Department of Transportation. NDOT has already approved this grant as long as certain steps were completed and those have apparently been accomplished, including an appraisal.

Lyon County Commissioner Bob Milz, who has been involved in the project for a number of years, announced at the Feb. 15 meeting the appraisal had come in at a higher figure but Bawden was donating the difference in that figure and the sales figure (180,000 according to an official document telling of the donation and waiver of receiving appraisal amount) that is covered through the grant (the county by state law may buy property for no more than the appraised price but lower is allowable).

The proposal is that the property would go under the stewardship of the Historical Society of Dayton Valley and now a grant would be pursued to pay for restoration of the structure to as close to its original condition as possible.

The ultimate plan is that the structure would be used as a visitor's center type facility at the gateway to downtown Dayton, housing offices for the historical society as well as the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bawden as a benefit to the community purchased the property several years ago and has reserved it for ultimate purchase by the county once the grant funding was coming through. A group of local residents had been formed, one with the moniker "Save the Dayton Station", for a community use as planned and to preserve the property at the corner of Main Street and Highway 50, as locals feared it would be sold and developed for a less-desirable commercial use at that site leading into the historic downtown section.

The depot building, which reportedly is over 140 years old, had been moved to its current 1.1-acre site (5585 East Highway 50) several years ago from a location across the highway and had been used as a residence until becoming vacant in recent years.

In November the county commission had approved a cooperative stewardship agreement with NDOT for purchase of the property

The station was a stop on the Carson & Colorado Railroad where a narrow gauge track ran from Mound House through Dayton to Keeler, CA. It is one of two remaining C&C RR stations.
