Construction is estimated to begin next year on renovations to the former Pere Marquette Railroad Depot in downtown Bay City.
Six bids for a top-to-bottom historical renovation of the structure near the intersection of Fourth Street and Madison Avenue were opened Wednesday.
Gregory Construction Co., 800 Woodside Ave., was the apparent low bidder, with a bid of $3,218,000, said Leslie Koscielecki, purchasing manager for the city of Bay City.
The bid is about $60,000 less than architect's estimate for the work, Koscielecki said. But bid documents are still being reviewed to make sure they meet specifications.
Gregory, if chosen by the City Commission to perform the work, would do a complete renovation of the building to state historical standards. That includes restoring the original tile floor, putting a tower back on the building, installing a clay tile roof, and refurbishing the windows, which are made of old growth oak, Koscielecki said.
''Basically, the depot will look very much like it originally did when it was built (in 1904),'' she said.
Bids also must be reviewed by the state Department of Transportation, which provided grant money for the project. The goal is to start construction around April; the renovations are projected to take 18 months.
The building is owned by the nonprofit Great Lakes Center Foundation, which plans to turn it into a home for the Bay Area Community Foundation and the Bay City Convention & Visitors Bureau.
