On Monday 11 November our intrepid CNE Tour planning group made a scouting run of the 2007 CNE Historical Tour. On hand were Lee Beaujon, Jack Swanberg, Ed Hoostowski, Joe Mato and his wife rose with yours truly as van driver. In April we will explore the section of the CNE that once was the ND&C RR. The plan is to start from the transportation park and ride lot by the baseball stadium off route 9D in Beacon, NY. This lot is about a mile north of Interstate 84 on 9D right next to the baseball stadium parking lot. It is about a mile from the end of the Beacon Newburgh Bridge.
From there we will go to Fishkill landing where the Newburgh train car ferry was built on fill land before the big bridge in Poughkeepsie was built. Fishkill Landing was also the yard and interchange where the CNE met the Hudson Line of the NY Central RR. We will follow the old route of the ND&C RR through Matteawan (Beacon) where the old CNE headquarters building is still in use for apartments and a nail salon. Next will be Fishkill then Hopewell Junction where we will see the restoration work on the Hopewell Depot and the remains of the Maybrook Line which is being paved for a rail trail. Following the ND&C northward we will see LaGrange, Millbrook, Bangall, McIntyre, Stissing Junction and parts of Pine Plains. Most likely we will stop for lunch at Lias Restaurant in Pine Plains as we have done for the past few trips.
We still have more planning and scouting to do but this is the general idea. We will have smaller buses this time to avoid some of the bridge and low wire problems of the last tour. The down side is that we will not have as many seats this time. The tentative plan is try the tour on a Saturday this time and see how it works out. Most likely it will be on 14 April. Keep this date open and we will send out better information when things start coming together.
By the way, the attached photo is the former ND&C section house from Stissing Junction. Following a tip from Don Fegan, we found it in the back yard of a home on Attlebury Hill Road a few miles south of Pine Plains. It still has the original gingerbread trim along the roof line. That section of the railroad was abandoned and torn out in 1938.
Hope to see you in April and we will keep you posted.
Bernie Rudberg
