State grant will help revitalize station

SCRANTON — A $2 million state grant will be used to turn a piece of
railroad history into a cornerstone of redevelopment.

State Sen. Robert J. Mellow, D-Peckville, on Thursday will announce
details of the grant to convert the historic Central New Jersey Railroad
Station, 601 West Lackawanna Ave., into a restaurant and retail and
office space. Built in 1891, the station is on the National Register of
Historic Places and is representative of the type built locally in the
late 1800s to primarily facilitate the exportation of coal.

Except for a stint in the 1980s as a produce warehouse, the building has
been virtually empty for the past 20 years.
