The North Carolina Railroad Museum (NCRM), operated by the East Carolina Chapter NRHS, is seeking photographs of some station buildings, and would appreciate any assistance any of you can give.
First, our facility is located at the community of Bonsal, North Carolina (just south of Apex) where the NS Durham Branch we now operate as the New Hope Valley Railway crossed and connected with the Seaboard. The station at Bonsal served up to six trains per day at one point, but disappeared to progress many years ago, probably when passenger service was abandoned on the NS Durham Branch in 1931. We have a "footprint" diagram of the building from a valuation docket done by the ICC in 1917, but have never been able to locate a photo of the building. We are looking for such a photo.
Second, the original line of the NS Durham Branch, originally built as the Durham & South Carolina Railroad (D&SC), operated along the west bank of New Hope Creek. The valley of that creek was impounded as Jordan Lake by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1980s, and the line relocated around the eastern shore of the lake. Three stations once existed along the line, but their locations (and probably foundations such as they were) are now at the bottom of the lake. We would like to find photos of these three stations; Beaver Creek, Seaforth, and Farrington. We know station buildings, perhaps very small station buildings, existed at Seaforth and Farrington, and the old track elevation diagrams show a building at Beaver Creek about where a station ought to be.
Any help any of you is able to give will be greatly appreciated. We have done, and continue to do, some very extensive research on the valley of New Hope Creek and the railroad in once held. This is a part of that research. We hope some of you can be a part of it.
Best Regards,
Bob
