Pigeon Depot Museum loaded with local history
LINDSEY WAHOWIAK , The Huron Daily Tribune
PIGEON — The Pigeon Historical Society and Depot Museum is adding a new
piece to its history this summer.
The museum, located in the former Pigeon train depot, has a new worker and
some new displays.
Laker High School senior Kevin Faupel is the new attendant at the museum,
helping the historical society with day-to-day care of the facility.
Faupel has a keen interest in history, particularly American history, and
came with high recommendations, said Historical Society President Marie
Leipprandt. “At school one of the teachers sent me a note to call Marie at her house
if I was interested, and she gave me the job,” Faupel said.
Faupel has already helped the society with three new displays, which cover
antique toys, Christmas ornaments and Native American artifacts. These
displays rotate every year, Leipprandt said.
Everything in the museum comes directly from Pigeon and the people who live
there. It showcases a wide variety of railroad paraphernalia because of the
railroad’s rich history in the area.
The Grand Trunk Railroad and the Chesapeake and Ohio lines all stopped at
the depot in its prime.
“As railroads crossed, Pigeon became a town,” Leipprandt said. “We try to
keep the depot like it was. Every year I’m excited about having people come in
and enjoy and reminisce.”
Each artifact on display in the museum must first pass approval by the
Historical Society Board. Leipprandt said this keeps people from “dropping off
junk.”
“The Pigeon Historical Society has a good board to work with. They all work
together to do this,” she said.
The society also works on a volunteer basis. Only the student attendant gets
paid. Entry into the museum is free, although donations are accepted and
appreciated.
March is Member Month, as well, and businesses can donate money to the
museum. Leipprandt said nearly everyone is incredibly generous.
“It says to us (that) they must be happy we’re here and they support us. We’
re really happy. Last year it was just fabulous,” she said.
Leipprandt and Faupel both encourage the Thumb community to visit the museum
and share in Pigeon’s rich history.
“I don’t see how they can’t come in and see it. We have a really great
museum with quality artifacts,” Leipprandt said.
The Pigeon Historical Society and Depot Museum is open all summer on Monday
through Friday from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. It is
located at 59 South Main Street in downtown Pigeon.
