It's important to remember that Europeans are among the most heavily
taxed people in the world. Europeans pay at least twice as much per
unit (gallon or liter) of gasoline as we do. And nearly 2/3 of the price
they pay is in taxes which support the passenger rail systems in their
countries as well as the highways. It is also important to realize that
many European airlines receive government subsidies and some are
still partially (or even mostly) government-owned.
