OLD DEPOT TO BE TORN DOWN
Harriman - An abandoned railroad depot built 95 years ago on land donated
by this village's namesake is about to be demolished.
A contractor hired by Norfolk Southern, the railroad that owns the
property, met with Harriman building inspector Ron Walker Tuesday to get a
demolition permit. An excavator that will be used to tear down the
dilapidated Grove Street building is already parked next to it. Walker
ordered the railroad to remedy the structure about two months ago, Mayor
Steve Welle said.
Railroad and banking magnate E.H. Harriman donated the land on which
the station was built in 1911. The brick-and-stucco building closed in the
late 1950s or early 1960s and has gradually slid into disrepair. A few
years ago, Orange County officials talked with the Town of Monroe about
giving the building to the town for a history museum once the county bought
the stretch of unused tracks that the station sits beside. Harriman was
also negotiating to buy the property. At first, Welle said, the railroad
agreed to sell the land for $125,000 but then wanted to lease it.
