Subject: Flagler's Seven Mile Bridge
Hello Professor Camp:
My name is Debbie Love and I am a member of the nonprofit group "Save
Old Seven Mile" in the Florida Keys. We are a grass roots group of
folks who are determined to save and restore one of the last original
railroad bridges of Flagler's, "Eighth Wonder". Our website,
www.savethesevenmile.org has information about what we are trying to
accomplish.
About 3 years ago, FDOT prepared a study on several alternatives to
address the degradation of the only actively used bridge in the Florida
Keys (span connecting Marathon with Pigeon Key). The DOT engineers
prepared several scenarios and pledged 16 million in funds to its
rehab. However, last November, FDOT decided the only truly cost
effective solution was the destruction of the bridge and a the
construction of a modern replacement. While they are still willing to
spend up to 16 million, it will be up to the foundation to find the
additional funding necessary to rehabilitate this national landmark.
Therefore, we are contacting railroad and bridge enthusiastics who
would be willing to lend their support/time/talent to preserve an
important part of history.
If possible, we would appreciate any words of wisdom you may have for
our organization. Thank you in advance for your kind assistance.
Debbie Love
