(rshsdepot) NPS/Amtrak's Trails and Rails Program is looking for new volunteers!

For the past five years, I have participated in the Trails and Rails
Program, sponsored by the National Park Service in conjunction with Amtrak. The
program is designed to explain to passengers aboard selected Amtrak trains the
various sights of interest along the way, thereby helping to foster an
appreciation of America's natural and cultural heritage. Participating volunteers,
who are enrolled by the National Park Service in its Volunteers in the Parks
Program, present an interpretive commentary aboard the trains. I have found
this experience very interesting and rewarding.

The Trails and Rails Program is presented on various Amtrak trains
throughout the country. For more information, see

_Trails & Rails Trains_ (http://www.nps.gov/trails&rails/Trains.htm)

Since I live in northern New Jersey, I have participated in the program
presented on the Adirondack, from Croton-Harmon to Hudson, NY. (The Adirondack
program is also presented north of Saratoga Springs.) This spring, the program
will be expanded to the Maple Leaf. In addition to the segment from
Peekskill to Hudson, a new commentary has been developed that will be presented from
Schenectady to Syracuse, NY, focusing on the history of the Erie Canal,
which the train route parallels.

We are looking for additional volunteers to enable us to expand this
program. Volunteers are provided with an informational packet giving the
history of the route and the various sights along the way, but are expected to
interact with passengers and to gear their presentation to the needs and
interests of the passengers. Volunteers receive complimentary transportation on
Amtrak when presenting the program and when returning, and are also reimbursed
for incidental expenses that they may incur in connection with the program.
All volunteers participating in the program are required to participate in a
safety training session and an orientation for the route over which they will
be presenting the program.

For more information, or if you are interested in participating, please
contact me (_CoolGuy127_@_aol.com_ (mailto:CoolGuy127@aol.com) ).
