Re: (rshsdepot) Question on reproducing photos
For my most recent book "Built for War: Canada's Intercolonial Railway" (Railafre*DC Books, Montreal)I scanned the old prints and postcards myself. The designer preferred JPEG images (others like GIF or TIF depending on the program they use) but they had to be high resolution scans, nothing under 400 dpi. This makes for massive files, but I burned them on a CD and sent it CD to the designer.
You are going to have to be content with copies in most cases rather than original, prints, because most archives are reluctant to let the originals out of their control, and have the copies made by a contract photographic agency.
Every time a photo is copied, it loses about 25 per cent of its resolution, so scanning the copy and then going direct to a JPEG in the page design program is the best way to avoid further image loss.
