McGregor Amtrak depot seeks grant, new look

MCGREGOR – The Amtrak train depot here will get a $650,000 face-lift if the
city of McGregor receives a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

The station is owned and operated by Burlington-Northern Railroad, but
economic development director Leo Connor said ownership would be turned over to
McGregor if the city were approved for the grant.
“The paperwork is essentially done,” he said, adding that it would be
submitted to a committee this month. That committee will then pass the work on to
state officials in Austin.
Community development coordinator Jennifer Taylor said ideas for improving
the depot and surrounding area already are being fleshed out.
“If we get the grant, we're going to make it more accessible,” she said. The
depot will have security lighting, wheelchair access and a new
passenger-loading platform, as well as upgraded restroom facilities. The inside waiting
area will be renovated, and a covered waiting area will be added to the
exterior.
“There's also a cargo platform which we'll repair and enlarge, in hopes that
we can have a band out there someday,” she said.
Future plans include landscaping and a possible park, although Taylor said
those projects won't be part of the grant.
The American Legion post in McGregor plans to sell bricks to help pay for a
veterans memorial to be installed just outside the depot, Taylor said.
“We're just trying to make a nice-looking depot that's safe,” she said.
The depot serves as a stop for Amtrak's Eagle Line passenger rail service and
 has offices for Burlington-Northern employees.
If the grant, which would cover 80 percent of the upgrade cost, is approved,
work could begin as early as late summer, Connor said.
