Committee working to restore Minot`s Amtrak  depot



The Amtrak depot here will return to its 1903 look under plans by a local  
committee.  
The depot is the only experience many passengers get of Minot, said Dennis  
Lutz, chairman of the Amtrak Depot Restoration Committee.  
``A classic-looking depot certainly would go a long ways to advertise our  
community,`` he said. ``We think it would certainly be a landmark building for  
Minot. It would be a memorable stop for passengers who come through Minot on  
Amtrak.  
To get started, the committee has $360,000 from a federal grant through the  
state Transportation Department and city matching funds. The total cost of the 
 work is estimated at around $500,000, so the committee is seeking more 
money. It  plans to sell bricks engraved with donor names.  
The committee plans to open bids March 21. During construction, Amtrak  
headquarters will move to another building temporarily.
