This story was widely publicized at the time (2002) and basically
trashed Ambrose's reputation. A few months later, he died of lung
cancer. It's sad in so many respects. He was a well regarded war
historian and I remember how unnecessary his railroad book was,
coming out as it did just months after Empire Express, a far superior
book.
