An update from Bob Kutella on the Midwest Interurban list regarding the New
Orleans trolleys situation.
A lot of second hand info is circulating out there and so nothing is
for certain. Aerial photos show the Carrolton Depot (barn) surronded
by water on all sides, though not looking too deep. I had heard that
hey were starting to sandbag after the levee broke and presumably any
damage there was slight. The Canal street barn had up to eight feet
of water in it by some accounts and about 200 employees (and their
families) trapped awaiting rescue. The company had called in folks to
Canal Street, which is also their control and command center, before
the storm struck. Families were also allowed to take shelter there
since it was uncertain how long the employees would be required to
stay on duty.
