RE: (rshsdepot) Fw: City of New Orleans

According to FEMA director Mike Brown trains are now running in and out of
New Orleans and are being used to get people out. Not sure I would take
anything this guy said at face value but.....

GULF COAST CRISIS: PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE
Amtrak runs trains to Jackson, Miss.

John Schmeltzer, Tribune staff reporter
Published September 3, 2005

What's happening: Amtrak's City of New Orleans passenger trains, which carry
520 people daily between Chicago and New Orleans, were stopped in Memphis
Thursday but extended to Jackson, Miss. by Friday.

Why: Amtrak's passenger rail terminal in downtown New Orleans remains
flooded, and tracks in the city are covered with water.

Before the storm: Amtrak was struggling to convince Congress to fund its
operations for another year. President Bush did not include any operating
assistance in the fiscal 2006 budget.

What's ahead: The passenger rail agency said that beginning Monday City of
New Orleans trains will terminate and originate in Jackson, Miss., about 200
miles north of the stricken city.

Passengers trying to reach the New Orleans area will have to seek alternate
transportation to reach their final destination.
