Restoration of Harpers Ferry train station expected to begin

A historic train station in the Eastern Panhandle will get a second life as
restoration efforts are expected to begin soon.

The Harpers Ferry train station, built in 1894, will be restored to resemble
how it appeared in the 1930s, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park
Superintendent Donald Campbell said Friday.

The restored station, which could reopen by the end of 2007, will be used by
the town, MARC commuters, Amtrak and the National Park Service, Campbell
said.

``It will be beautiful,`` Campbell said.

A nearly $2.1 million contract was expected to be awarded in a few weeks to
help with the restoration, Campbell said.
Plans include rebuilding a tower dismantled years ago and replacing the
station`s rotted timber foundation with concrete.
