I'm not sure if this has been mentioned previously, but I ran across an interesting online resource. Rutgers University has placed a number of historic maps online. You may view the collection at http://mapmaker.rutgers.edu/MAPS.html. Most of the maps are available at a high level of detail and rail lines and depots are often visible.
